Possible Projects for Non-Career Missionaries
THE LIST

A. Education Program
Most of these are under the direction of Phil and Jo Hummel. See the Education Program for more information. Supplemental to that program are:

  1. Volunteer teaching by prior arrangement with a local school

  2. Tutoring, especially English as a Second Language (ESL) to recent immigrants and special "camps"

  3. Teaching computer skills in various settings, especially Pacific Islands Bible College or one of the local Christian schools

  4. Providing library services through PIBC whether on Guam or Chuuk

  5. Teaching life skills, especially money-handling and stewardship for Micronesians and other recent arrivals on Guam. This can extend to churches and other ministries.

  6. Teaching staff children on the PIBC campus on Tol Island, Chuuk State, Federated States of Micronesia

  7. There are other opportunities as well which are farther out from our program and physically farther out into the smaller islands of Micronesia. Any person looking into this must have the adventurous disposition of Peace Corps or back-packer type travelers.

B. Building Projects

1. PIBC Guam Campus projects:

a. Finish the maintenance building and shop installation.

b. Remove the old, damaged finish on the long building (library, men's dorm, and staff apartment) and apply new plaster.

2. Faith Presbyterian Reformed Church new building project

ServiceLink, another agency of the CRCNA, is providing workers for this project, and we recommend interested persons contact their office at 1(800)280-5275 ext. 739

or their web site at http://www.crwrc.org/volunteer_opportunities/about_servicelink.html

3. Faith Apartment projects:

a. a group of three men (with wives?) to put up a wall & fence combination around the apartment building. Duration: about three weeks. NOTE: as of January 15 this job is partially complete. Needed yet are low curbs or walls under two of the new fences to prevent erosion.

b. a cabinet-maker to restore the kitchen cabinets. We have most of the tools and supplies locally. Similar projects are pending for the mission house, both bookstores and PIBC library. Duration: two weeks for any one project with at least six projects pending. NOTE: this project is in process of being completed as of this writing (see footer, below)

c. a landscaper to improve the lot around the apartments to improve the campus grounds for PIBC. NOTE: this project is partially done and will be finished within the next couple months by local labor (see footer for date of this writing, below)

d. Stay-at-home non-career missionaries: -make fixtures for the stores, schools, libraries, etc. and ship them. You can do this in your home shop and include friends or the church's Cadet program. -produce web pages, set up wide-area networks, intranets, etc. using electronic communications.

e. Habitat for Humanity is working here on Guam and has some opportunities.

C. Social Work and Counseling

(These would be done in partnership with existing ministries, especially Foundation House, a foster-care and feeding program for dysfunctional families.)

  1. Prison Fellowship

  2. Pastoral Counseling

  3. Youth work

  4. Friendship evangelism

D. Pastoring and Preaching

  1. Pacific Presbyterian Church (Korean) has a group of younger members and spouses who do not speak Korean. Opportunity exists for developing this.

  2. Chinese Church of Guam has similar needs.

  3. The Bible Society of Micronesia needs a seminary-trained person with skill in the original Scripture languages (Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic) to consult with translation committees. This would be under the direction of Dr. Stephen Kio, translation consultant for the Bible Society.

E. Media Programs

(Most projects are in the bookstores, but please be aware that we will not displace locally-hired persons in favor of volunteers.)

  1. Floor walking: being knowledgeable and friendly to customers and being able to share the gospel when permitted.

  2. Ordering: after understanding the needs and budget of one or two departments, be able to search the catalogs, the web and other sources and place orders for stock.

  3. Computers: Understand the computer set-up and be able to montor it and perform periodic backups and emergency recovery procedures.

  4. If the volunteer comes with prior retailing experience, serve to consult on a variety of issues such as marketing and merchandising.

  5. If the volunteer comes with artistic skills, be able to offer workshops in Christian art, music, writing or literature.

  6. If the volunteer has financial ability, offer counseling for people in trouble through workshops held in the stores using material on sale.

  7. If the volunteer has church skills, offer consulting for church management in conjunction with PIBC courses.

  8. If the volunteer has experience in radio production, announcing, programming, and technical skills, we have a specific request from KTWG (AM 800) here on Guam.

Check back with this page from time to time since additions and subtractions will be made. Also, I will link each element in the lists above to separate pages describing the project and encouraging your response.
