STAR COUNT INSTRUCTION AND DATA SHEET

  1. Take a partner and a flashlight and find the darkest spot in your yard. Try to block as much light as possible from the streetlights. Have your partner hold the data sheet and the flashlight.
  2. Take your Precision Scientific Instrument (PSI) and hold it up to one eye. Count the stars you see. Don’t move the PSI while you’re counting.
  3. Call out the number of stars you saw to your partner and have them record the data on the sheet in the first box.
  4. Look at another part of the sky with your PSI and count the number of stars you see. Have your partner record this number on line two.
  5. Look at eight more parts of the sky and record your data on the sheet.
  6. Record the number of streetlights that are visible from the location where you took your data.
  7. Repeat at a different location.
