MARCH
APRIL
CHAMORU
SKY STORIES
OLD
AND NEW
11,
12 and 13 March
One of the saddest
consequences of the Spanish invasion is that the Chamoru people lost most
of their sky stories. Although I’ve asked many people, no one seems
to know any Chamoru stories about constellations or other sky phenomena
like what causes eclipses or phases of the Moon.
So we decided to do
something about it. This month’s Planetarium show is Chamoru
Sky Stories: Old and New. We'll
tell you the Chamoru legend of creation, a story told to me by a local
Chamoru gentleman thata's a marvelous story about what happened to The
Star that Fell from the Sky. Our last tale starts with the local
legend about the big fish that tried to eat through the island and was
caught with a net made from some lovely ladies’ hair. We learn, however,
that that’s only the beginning of the story in Chief Gadao and the Big
Fish.
You can hear all these
stories at 6:30 p.m. and they will be in English, but you'll want to stay
for the 7:00 p.m. show because the same stories will be told to you in
Chamoru! So join us this month for a unique cultural experience and
learn some new tales you can tell to your own children. Celebrate
Chamoru month in a totally unique way!
The doors open
at 6:00 p.m., the shows are free and best of all the Planetarium air conditioner
is FIXED.
See you then!

THE
MAGIC HALF HOUR!
15,
16 and 17 April 2010
It's that time of year
again, when Guam's skyies put on the best show on the planet. It's
the time when you can see eight of the ten brightest stars, 15 of the 20
brightest stars, the largest and smallest constellations, the three most
famous constellations and you can see them ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!
This is only possible in the equatorial tropics.
The
Magic Half Hour tells you exactly how to find
all this wonder and it will be shown at 6:30 on all three nights.
Then at 7:00 we'll have what I call QTWTSL. This means Quality Time
with the Star Lady. Bring your space-related questions and I'll attempt
to answer them. But what we're really doing is stalling for time
until it gets dark enough that we can go out and see all that wonder in
the REAL SKY!!
You've probably noticed
that April's shows are not on the second weekend of the month. That's
because the second weekend is the first anniversary of Mariano Mesngon's
death and I'll be celebrating his new life among the stars. I hope
to see you on the third weekend for THE MAGIC
HALF HOUR!
