Africa has been the region hardest hit by AIDS so far, but the disease is now spreading at the most dramatic rate in Southeast Asia and India, according to the World Health Organization.
UNAIDS' Saladin Osmanov told participants at the recent meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that an estimated 33 million people are now infected with HIV worldwide and that a total of 7.6 million people have died of AIDS, including 2.6 rnillion children.
In January WHO estimated that 40 million people worldwide will be affected by AIDS by the year 2000.
