Are you looking for good news?
There is some, worldwide. In Thailand, for example, condom use has increased
and has "become the norm for sex workers."
In
France, condom sales in pharmacies and supermarkets nearly doubled between
1986 and 1993.
In
Africa, condom demand has increased greatly. In 1988 fewer than one million
were sold. In 1994 110 million were sold by one condom marketing firm alone.
In
the Ivory Coast, Africa among an estimated 12,000 sex workers participating
in a peer health education intervention introduced in 1991, condom use increased
from 30% in 1991 to 90% in 1993.
But also, not so good news
In the U. S.:
* AIDS is the leading cause of death among men ages 25 to 44.
* AIDS is the third leading cause of death among women ages 25 to 44.
* AIDS is the sixth leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24.
Sexual assault and domestic violence can put women at risk for HIV infection.
Women who are raped, sexually abused, or who are victims of domestic violence
have lost the power to make decisions about whether or not to engage in
sexual activity and about personal safety, are thus at risk for unprotected
sexual activity. This unprotected act puts women at risk for being infected
with HIV.
