by Pam Cruz, President, SHRM Chapter-Guam
Thanks to strong participation by all Chapter members, SHRM Guam has had another extremely good year.
As Chapter President, I have had the support of an energetic Board of Directors, whose commitment and visionary talents have prepared a strong foundation for the future. Our chapter again received a "Superior Merit Award" for its activities and meeting the SHRM national standards for such an award.
Membership has continued to increase and we will be recognizing our 100th member, if not this month, then in January. Increasing attendance at the monthly luncheon meetings, of both members and non-members, reflects the perceived value of our luncheon speakers, programs which meet the needs and interests of HR practitioners. Specialty presentations such as the Diversity Conference and our Annual Regional Conference are well received and are professional in both content and presentation.
Financially, we will end the year in strong position--we have used some of our income to provide financial assistance to the SHRM Guam Student Chapter, as well as donating resource materials to the University of Guam Library, and making a contribution to the UOG School of Business Administration Foundation.
Our newsletter has expanded in content and frequency, and in the new year, we plan to have a website online. Certification courses are now a standard, and HR practitioners are formalizing their experience and learning with PHR and SPHR designations. The minor in HR which was established at UOG is being reviewed, and we are working to expand the number of courses available.
Congratulations to each and everyone of you for being part of this dynamic and exciting chapter! Thank you for your support as I finish out my term as President.
| Thank you Madame President! The members of SHRM Guam Chapter would like to extend their thanks to Pam Cruz for a job well done as President. We all sincerely appreciate the time and effort Pam gave to the organization. |

It's hard to believe the fall semester is about to come to an end. The student chapter has been busy. We started the semester by participating in the "Welcome Back" concert held in September. The SHRM student chapter sold Mongolian barbecue plates during the event. Now, the club is well known for serving up one of the island's best tasting Mongolian barbecue. Kudos to Chef Diego, as well as to all of the student members who donated various food items and their time to a successful fund raiser.
October was also a busy month for the student chapter. It was a pleasure to assist with the SHRM-Guam 4th Annual Regional Conference. The conference's theme this year was "Wizardry in the Workplace," and in keeping with the theme, we invited two gypsies, as you may recall, to read the fortunes of the participants. We'd like to thank everyone who gave a donation to the student chapter while having their fortune read by our gypsies. We'd also like to thank everyone for being such good sports.
UOG's RFK Library is richer in learning resources thanks to the generous book donations of the SHRM-Guam Chapter. UOG students, as well as the rest of the community now have access to the latest HR resources. The book dedication took place at the RFK library on the 3rd of October. We were honored to have the President and CEO of SHRM-National, Michael Losey, as a guest speaker, along with Dr. Shimizu, Chairman of the Board of Regents, Dr. Fernandez, VP of Administration and Finance, and Pam Cruz, SHRM-Guam Chapter President.
