Simon Sanchez High School offers many classes for those wishing to enter medecine-related careers. In addition to basic science courses, like Anatomy, Chemistry, and Biology, there is a Health Occupancy and Nursing Preparation Class. The class is a Guam Community College Satellite Program. It is taught by an excellent teacher, Maria N.A. Respall, RN.

Course Description
This introductory course (Introduction to Health Occupations *HO 050*)provides the student basic entry-level knowledge and skills required for a variety of health occupations. The course includes basic health care concepts, such as health care systems, careers in health care, legal responsibilities, medical terminology, human growth and development, geriatric care, and nutrition and diets. Also included are basic skills on safety, infection control, vital signs, and computers in health care. It also covers special health care skills such as nursing assistant, medical assistant, and others. Shadowing and mentoring will be included to facilitate and enhance career exploration in the health field. This course is a prerequisite to the Nursing Assistant class. Students use the textbook Diversified Health Occupations (4th edition) by Simmers, Louise.


Activities and Design
Many different learning techniques such as lectures, small groups or individual discussions and presentations, practice skills and demonstrations, guests-speakers, educational field trips, shadowing and mentorship will be utilized. Attendance and participation to health occupation student organizations and to community services are necessary.

Grades
To get a good grade students must study, turn in work on time, and come to class prepared everyday. Students must participate in community services. Students' behavior must not disrupt class or interfere with education.
