OVERVIEW

This class is being offered at the high school level in the tradition of ‘Ceramic’ or Art Clay courses available in many college and university art programs. Students will learn to apply principles of art production learned in basic art (Art I) to this three dimensional medium. They will produce various finished objects which may be decorative and/or functional, which may be given as gifts, used for their designed purpose or simply displayed as beautiful works of art. The student in this advanced art class is expected to be aware of the higher costs, and of the more challenging tasks included within the class structure.

Students enroll in this class will, in the process of a hands-on construction of decorative and functional items of their own design, be able to recognize and demonstrate knowledge of:

  1. Ceramics terminology and vocabulary common to the field,
  2. Value and inter-relationship of form & function, from concept design to production,
  3. Basic techniques of manipulating various ceramic forms, and
  4. Basic techniques of processing clay from a raw material to a final permanent form.

Students are also expected to assemble a portfolio of their design & to display their products.
