Music Appreciation

Goals & Objectives:

The goals of this course are to increase students’ enjoyment of music, broaden their musical tastes, deepen their awareness of the western musical tradition and of musical styles throughout the world, acquaint them with various fields in music, and enable them to respond perceptively to the music the hear. The following musical areas will be covered throughout the course of this school year:

Music Theory

Orchestral and Band Instruments

Conducting

Technology in Music

World Music

Fundamentals of Voice, Piano, and Guitar

Composing and Arranging

Meditation and Music

Perceptive Listening and Music Critiquing

Western Music History

Items needed for class: writing paper, music notation paper, pencil, a good attitude, a responsible student, exceptional effort, a great smile, and last but not least…a BIG HEART!

Grading: Quarter grades will be computed as follows

Assignments and Participation 25%

Quizzes 15%

Tests 20%

Projects 35%

Personal Music Project 5%

Semester grades will be the average of their composite quarter grades.

Rules & Regulations:

Students will be required to abide by all established school regulations and will be disciplined accordingly for any infractions. In addition, students are to practice and enforce classroom rules, punishments, and rewards that they themselves formulate.

Tardies & Absences:

  1. Three unexcused tardies shall be considered as one unexcused absence.
  2. Unexcused tardiness of more than ten minutes will be considered one unexcused absence.
  3. Three or more unexcused absence deems parental notice and/or referral to the administrator, which may lead to parent conference.
  4. Twelve or more unexcused absences is grounds for No Credit.
