"Introduction to Photography"

This course introduced the student to the importance, the purpose and the manner in which visual information is chosen, shared and preserved by use of the photographic process in recent times since its’ invention, and shows current and future trends in the field. The student will master the basic skills and concepts in the production of black & white prints, and be capable of applying these and related skills in the industry workplaces of the community.

Basic Style: The full-year elective course prepares the student to perceive and create visual images of their surrounding for display according to basic art principles, while manipulating the technical variables and utilizing the appropriate equipment and materials with the necessary basic skills to achieve results

Entering Requirements: Each student is required to have available for their use, a 35 mm camera, preferably a manual style.

Each student is required to pay a $25 Lab Fee, applied towards the cost of print paper & chemicals

Each student must purchase their own film, but film is available for sale AT COST for student savings

For completion of a single "color" assignment, student must purchase & process a roll of color "slides"

Provided:

  1. Zeroxed copies of selected text materials for which the student is held responsible and tested upon.
  2. Equipment for the processing of black & white films and for the printing of B & W paper enlargements
  3. Black & White printing paper in reasonable quantities for completion of assignments
  4. Photographic chemical for processing of black & white films and prints

Understood: That ALL facilities, equipment & materials are to be utilized with the highest care and respect possible

That limited work-stations are available for use, therefore cooperation, team-work & sharing is essential

Skill Requirements:

  1. knowledge of basic principles of LIGHT and basic principles of ART as the two combine into image
  2. knowledge of all equipment, part names and their function (cameras, light sources, enlargers, props)
  3. knowledge of key historical facts, and persons in the field of photography
  4. knowledge of materials available for use in creating photo images—and how each influences others
  1. Product: a progressive set of ….developed film, proof sheet, enlarged print
  2. Product: enlargements demonstrating a variety of visual art principles….Assignment #1,2,3, etc.
  3. Product: enlargements demonstrating several topics as assigned….example: Self Portrait, etc.
  4. Product: images utilizing special high-contrast graphic materials, for dramatic impact
  5. Product: images utilizing computer digital editing techniques in producing a final work
  6. Product: limited images in color, demonstrating appropriate principles very unique to that area

Product Descriptions: Print Assignments are made, beginning 2nd Quarter or sooner. Each assignment is based on an Art Principle such as "Composition" or "Balance" or "Perspective" or a Topic Theme such as "self-portrait" or "people-at-work" or "landscape". Each print is graded by a 10 criteria (zero to ten points each), including: in-class production, proper format, in-focus & crisp, proper tone, turned in on time, cropped well, oriented properly, creativity , originality, and "meets the stated theme criteria fully."

Grading Basis:

First Quarter- based primarily upon KNOWLEDGE gained, as little opportunity yet to create a PRODUCT.

Second Quarter- based upon continuing knowledge AND upon basic products created as prints are made

2nd Semester- based primarily upon products created, and review & reinforcement of continued knowledge.
