"Advanced Photography"—Photo 2

(PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO PRODUCTION)

This course introduces the student to the more technical and creative methods and principles through which visual information is chosen, preserved and presented to both general and specific groups of viewers. The student will utilize and master a variety of specialty equipment, materials, and techniques in the preparation of final product supporting various ‘concepts’ commonly employed in a community workplace

Basic Style: The full-year elective course leads the student far beyond ‘Basic Photography’ and challenges their perceptive and creative energies to produce works or images according to basic art principles, while manipulating the technical variable and utilizing the appropriate advanced specialty equipment and materials with the necessary increased skills to achieve the desired results with various products

Entering Requirements: Same as "Introduction to Photography" plus successful completion of that course at a previous date, plus:

Each student is required to have available for their use, a 35mm camera, preferably manual in design

Each student is required to pay a $100 Lab Fee ($50 Per Semester) towards the high expense of the specialty chemicals and materials utilized in this advanced course

Skill Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of all content of Photo I : "Introduction to Photography"
  2. Knowledge of, and production of, additional materials and processes as presented, and detailed below
  1. Product: enlargements demonstrating advanced principles of Lighting, Portraiture, Composition, etc.
  2. Product: more extensive images in color demonstrating appropriate principles and techniques
  3. Product: works utilizing computer digital editing techniques for ‘retouching’ and creative enhancements
  4. Products: high-contrast graphics and dramatic special effects for visual effects
  5. Products: ‘Story-Boarding’ techniques preparing for video of film productions
  6. Products: works utilizing larger ‘medium-format’ films & cameras for large print sizes
  7. Products: works applying an image directly to uncommon materials, such as wood, cloth, stone & others
  8. Product: color printing techniques from negatives and from transparencies

Grading Basis: Each quarter- Quizzes & Tests on appropriate Vocabulary & Procedures within the product/technique area, PLUS

Evaluation of the completed products/techniques themselves…for example: In Computer-Digital Editing, the student is tested on the special terms, definitions & procedures (vocabulary) used only in that process. Then, the completed assignment/s and/or project/s of actual digital manipulation of a product are also evaluated for their grades

Specific Characteristic of the Course: Students must understand that the course is one full year in length <2 SEMESTERS>

Students must understand that they may be called upon to assist Photo I students from time to time

Students must understand that the course will require some additional minor expenses beyond the Lab Fee

Students must understand that building a PORTFOLIO of their work is required

Students must understand that they are required to submit their works for exhibit in the Island Student Art Show
