ELEMENTARY FUNCTION
FALL 1999
Mr. David C.W. Hu
Catalog Description:
Coordinate systems - the media between figures and
algebraic expressions. Points, lines, conic sections, and plane
curves. Slope of asecant and slope of a tangent. Domain,
range, max., min., intercepts, and asymptotes of polynomial,
rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric,
piecewise, and other assorted functions. Statistics and
probability. Operating a graphing calculator.
Course Objectives:
Students will learn the graphs and algebraic
expressions of assorted functions. More importantly, they will
learn about the critical factors of each function and what is the
interpretation of them in problem solving. They will also learn
how graphing calculator can be used to analyze functions and
their graphs.
Successful students will be able to sketch the
graph of a function accurately when the algebraic expression of
the function is given. They will be able to write the algebraic
expression of a function when the graph and some critical factors
of the function are provided. They will be able to calculate the
domain, range, intercepts, maximum, and minimum of a given
function. They will be able to translate word problems into
functions of single variable and solve them by analyzing the
critical factores of the functions. They will be able to use
graphing calculators to assist them in calculation and graphical
analysis. They will be able to find the expression of the inverse
of a simple function. They will also be able to solve problems
involving probabilites.
Textbook:
Brown R.G. and Robbins D.P. Advanced Mathematics. Houghton Mifflin. Boston. 1989.
Tutoring Hours:
I will be in room 304 in the morning 6:45 - 7:25 a.m. and during lunch 11:35 - 12:25 noon. Feel free to come and ask questions about math.
In the Classroom:
Class time will be taken up mostly by lecture and discussion. I will also answer questions and solve example problems. The assigned problems are what you need to study and practice on. You are encouraged to ask all the questions that you have about them after you exert considerable good effort to solve them by yourself. Aquiz will follow after all the questions are answered about the assignment. There will be a test at the end of each chapter and an exam at the end of each quarter. You are recommended to see me before your class-time (during my tutoring hours) if you have trouble studying it on your own after you come back from an absence.
Evaluation:
quizzes 30%
tests 40%
exam 30%
total 100%
Classroom Rules:
1. Follow instruction at all time.
2. Bring all needed supplies and book.
3. Make constructive remark only.
4. Conduct subject related activities only.
5. Observe all the rules of S.S.H.S.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have read the syllabus and I understand what is expected of me in this elementary function class. I also understand the classroom ruels and procedures provided by my teacher and in the student handbook. SHould I fail to achieve the expectations or to uphold these rules, I understand and accept the consequences that I face.
