SIMON SANCHEZ HIGH SCHOOL
MATH DEPARTMENT
COURSE SYLLABUS
MA106
PRE-ALGEBRA
SCHOOL YEAR 1999-2000
Mr. David C.W. Hu
Catalog Description:
Counting and order of operations with natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers. Inverse operations and simple algebraic equations. Equations and inequalities with application on problem solving. Graphical presentation of algebraic solutions. Application of algebra in simple geometric, counting, and probability problems.
Course Objectives:
Students will learn the properties of number and algebra. More importantly, they will learn how these properties can be applied to solve problems.
Successful students will know, understand, and be able to operate nature numbers, intergers, rational numbers, and simple algebraic expression. They will be able to present their solution numerically and graphically. They will be able to use their operating skill to solve some semi-real-live problems. They will be able to find perimeter and area of some geometric figures. They will be able to count numver of favorable outcome and numer of total possible outcome of some events and use them to calculate probabilities. They will be able to analyze some simple patterns and then make predictions with it.
Textbook:
Jack Price, James N. Rath, and William Leschensky. Pre-Algebra Merrill, 1995.
Tutoring Hours:
I will be in room 304 in the morning 6:45 - 7:25 a.m. and during lunch 11:35 - 12:25 noon. Feel free to come in and ask questions about math.
In the Classroom:
Class time will be taken up mostly by lecture and discussion. I will also answer questions and solve example problems. The assigned problems are what you need to study and practice on. You are encouraged to ask all the questions that you have about them after you exert considerable good effort to sove them by yourself. A quiz will follow after all the questions are answered about eh assignment. There will be a test at the end of each chapter and an exam at the end of each quarter. You are recommended to see me before your class-time (during my tutoring hours) if you have trouble studying it on your own after you come back from as absence.
Evaluation:
participation 15%
quizzes 30%
tests 30%
exam 25%
total 100%
Classroom rules:
1. Follow instuction at all time.
2. Bring all needed supplies and book.
3. Make constructive remark only.
4. Conduct subject related activities only.
5. Observe all the rules of S.S.H.S..
