Syllabus for Japanese I (Term 1999-2000) Room 109/ 108

Instructor: Mrs. Takae Shibasaki

Objectives: 1) Students will understand fundamental concepts of Japanese language and culture.

2)By the end of the term, students will be able to read and write simple Japanese sentences in both Hiragana and Katakana.

3)By the end of the term, students will be able to communicate in simple Japanese words.

4)Students may prepare for taking Japanese II and Japanese studies in college. They may also utilize their knowledge of Japanese in there daily lives.

Course Requirements:

1)Assigned exercises and participation. Most of the class activities, oral presentations, and quiz/ test reviews are scheduled on Fridays.

2)Short quizzes/unit tests. Most of the quizzes tests are scheduled on Mondays.

3)Worksheet exercises are due on the assigned date. Students are supposed to complete the worksheet assignment and turn in their notebook without delay.

4)Two term papers ( 2 to 3 pages each)

What to Bring:

1)All students are required to bring their writing materials such as pens ( black or blue) pencils, erasers, papers ( for quizzes/tests) and notebooks.

2)Prepare two notebooks: (A) one for taking notes

(B) the other for doing assigned worksheet exercises.

**Each page of the notebook (B) should be reviewed and signed by the parent(s) or guardian(s). If it is not properly signed, students have to take their notebooks back home again to be signed.

3)One Japanese- English/ English- Japanese dictionary. This is not mandatory but highly recommended.

Grading: Make-Ups: Friday Lunch hour or by

    1. A= 100 to 90 % appointment. See Mrs.
    2. B= 89 to 80 % Shibasaki first.
    3. C= 79 to 70 %
    4. D= 69 to 60 % Questions: See Mrs. Shibasaki before
    5. F= below 59 % or after class to make

    1. Students are expected to follow the instructions and behave in an appropriate and respectful manner
    2. Absolutely no feet stomping, throwing things, yelling, whistling, gum chewing, making loud noise, sleeping, and other inappropriate behaviors.
