INSIDE NEWS

Members Present 21 November

Mick Flynn, Glenn Hamp, Sara Turner, Ron Munia, and guests Jan Sharkey and Linette.

Meeting News

Secretary Mick opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance @ 6:40. Mick asked each of us to stand and introduce ourselves and tell where we work. Mick was the Toastmaster for the evening. Because of the small turnout everyone took on at least two assignments.

Table Topics

Glenn was our evening's Table topics Master. He called on Sara (2:05) to let us know if O.J. was guilty or not. explain why he would support or not.

Article Review

Sara picked an article from the Sept. issue of Toastmaster Mag. It was about the various considerations one must be aware of when negotiating in a different culture or foreign country. Amongst the six items mentioned were Americans are often considered: 1) gruff according to Europeans. 2) impatient. 3) aloof. 4) inflexible 5) lacking language skills. 6) very legalistic. It was a well chosen article and explained in a very interesting manner.

Joke for the night

Glenn told the story of the two friends who loved to play baseball. They made an agreement to get back to the other after he died and let the other know if there was baseball in heaven. One died and then appeared to the other one night and said that he had good & bad news about the heavenly baseball question. "The good news is that there is baseball in heaven." "The bad news is that you're tomorrow's starting pitcher.

Speaker for the evening

Ron came prepared and gave an eight minute talk on Astrology, "Catch a Falling Star" . We found out that about 10,000 tons of ash fall on the earths surface every year from meteorites which break up and burn after entering the earth's atmosphere. Also mid-November is generally a good time to see the "falling stars." Ron is on Guam with the Dept of Health & Human Services's Office of Refugee Resettlement. He travels around the world from his home in Miami to help coordinate such things as our Kurd resettlement efforts now going on here. It was a very interesting talk and Ron is a very interesting fellow. He is working on his Able Toastmaster Certification.

Reports

Sara told us all that non-word count was low. Mick reported on the time of each of the table topic speakers, Sara's Article Review and Ron's speech. Glenn's word for the evening "Clandestine' meaning secret was well used. Mick gave the best of grades to Ron for his speech. Ron as General Evaluator suggested that we post a sign near the entrance to help find the meeting place. He also suggested that we invest in a banner.
